A talent equal to ten

“The one who understands the art of properly preparing food, and who uses this knowledge, is worthy of higher commendation than those engaged in any other line of work. This talent should be regarded as equal in value to Ten Talents; for its right use has much to do with keeping the human body (organism) in health. Because so inseparably connected with life and health, it is the most valuable of all gifts.”                                                                                                                                  ~E.G. White, Counsels on Diet and Foods pg. 251

I started off a veg*n cookery journey with the original 1968 Ten Talents cookbook, bought at a second-hand bookshop in Christchurch. I still have the original book, albeit covered with splotches, splashes and stains, but as it was starting to lose pages and the plastic binder had broken I decided it was time for a new one.

This new edition, the most expensive cookbook I have ever purchased, is fantastic. It’s colourful, has an index (my old one had lost that long before I acquired it) and makes good, basic, tasty, simple food from ingredients that aren’t difficult to obtain. I feel that the recipes are trustworthy because, as every cook knows, sometimes recipes from certain cooks or books just don’t work! I also love that now in the new edition there’s a metric conversion table, very useful as some metric measurements, e.g. tablespoons, can vary between country to country.

I own a lot of veg*n cookery books and this is certainly one, if not the best. It’s a beautiful, reliable and trustworthy addition to any kitchen, veg*n or not. Thank you to the Hurd family for creating it.

So far, the recipes I’ve tried are delicious. The fact that there are so many pictures really keeps my interest in looking through the book and wanting to try the recipes.
One complaint I have is when they reference another recipe (like a pie crust, bread, dressing, etc), it would be helpful to list a suggested page number to direct people to. Otherwise, we have to look in the index. Also, I’ve found a FEW places where an ingredient is slightly different than in the instructions (ie. agar powder listed, but instructions say, add agar flakes), this makes a difference in measurements, so want to make sure which one they’re talking about. But, most places do list a choice of ingredients, which is great.
I would highly recommend this book; best recipe book I’ve ever had and chalked FULL of educational health information!!! I’ve learned a LOT.

    Worth More than the Price!
I am a cooking school instructor and have an extremely large selection of cook books and reference materials. I used to teach at the Lifestyle Center of America. We helped people learn to eat and live healthier. This cook book is my absolute favorite. I have decided to order this book by the case to share with my cooking classes. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. This book is filled with pictures and fool proof instructions that teach a person to bake bread, sprout, can foods, make delicious beverages, even includes vegetable juices; tips for tools of the trade, pictures a variety of grains, seeds, nuts, beans; besides more recipes than you will ever find for the price in another cook book. All of the recipes are healthy and delicious. Whether you love your meat and just want to include more vegetables and fruits in your diet or you are an avowed vegan vegetarian; I believe that this cookbook will be a great resource for any cook. Try it: Taste them and see, the recipes are delicious!
